New York - reconstructies: metroaankondigingen

De Nederlandse hematoloog-dichter Leo Vroman werkte vele jaren in Manhattan en woonde in Brooklyn. Meestal gebruikte hij dan de D-metrolijn voor zijn woon-werk-verplaatsing.
Tijdens ons verblijf in Brooklyn hebben ook heel vaak deze D-lijn gebruikt. In meerdere gedichten komt de metro ter sprake, zoals op de laatste bladzijden van zijn bundel uit 1995; "Psalmen en andere gedichten".

In een reeks (Engelstalige) gedichten roept hij de sfeer op van zo'n metrogebeuren. Het laatste heeft als titel "announcements" (blz.160 van de hierbovengenoemde bundel). Ik schrijf even over omdat ik de stemming  die daarin wordt geevoceerd zo herkenbaar vind, maar ik garandeer niet dat ik de verzen 2 tot 6  helemaal correct overneem.

On a rainy Wednesday at 116th and Broadway:

due to an unauthorized person
on the tracks at Grant Street.
We advise you to take the uptown
and then the downtown BMT.'

Overheard through the walls of a running D's
engineer's closet:
'Control tower? Woof, woof.'
'Miauw miauw'.
